Vitali Klitschko to Defend Title Against Albert Sosnowski

Ukrainian-born, 38-year-old nearly 6-foot-8 WBC heavyweight champion, Vitali Klitschko, will defend his crown against 31-year-old, Polish-born, nearly 6-3, Albert Sosnowski of Brentwood Essex England on May 29 at Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, his promotional company, K2 announced on Tuesday.

Klitschko (39-2, 37 knockouts) is coming off of December's unanimous decision over 30-year-old American contender Kevin Johnson (22-1-1, nine KOs), of Atlanta, whom Klitschko simply outworked over the course of 12 rounds.

In facing Sosnowski (45-2-1, 27 KOs), Klitschko will be making the fourth defense of the belt he earned with an October, 2008, eighth-round knockout of Samuel Peter -- this after having been out of the ring for four years.

Paul Williams-Kermit Cintron Could be Headed for D.C.

Washington, D.C.-- Last Wednesday's press conference at The Lincoln Theatre was intended to promote the May 1 welterweight (147 pounds) clash between unbeaten Floyd Mayweather and WBA super champion, Shane Mosley slated for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

But before the principles were introduced, one of the officials on stage pointed to Paul Williams, who was sitting in the crowd, and asked him to stand up.

And when the former two-time welterweight and one-time junior middleweight (154 pounds) did stand up, the more than 1,500 boxing fanatics who had packed the venue beyond its capacity were boisterous and roundly supportive in appreciation of his status and achievement.

A rangy fighter, with too-fisted power and a seemingly, endless energy reserve, Williams is known for unleashing an unheard of number of punches during his action-packed bouts.

"I've been coming to D.C. for like 12 years, and they've shown me a lot of love down here in D.C., that's why I sort of ran back here," said the 28-year-old Williams (38-1, 27 knockouts), a slender, nearly 6-foot-2, fighter who trains at the Barcroft Recreation Center in nearby Arlington, Va., frequents shows in Maryland, and supports local fighters in and around the Washington, D.C. area.

"Everybody says, 'I know you're originally from Carolina, but you're really a D.C. boy,'" said Williams. "So I'm rolling with the home team."

Roy Jones, Francois Botha, Both 41, Await Nevada License Approval

On March 1, four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, and 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins, whose 20-title defenses is a middleweight (160 pounds) record, were licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, commission director, Keith Kizer, told FanHouse on March 2.

Kizer said that Holyfield (42-10-2, 27 knockouts) has been granted a one-bout license to pursue the fringe WBF title on April 10 against 41-year-old Francois Botha (47-4-3, 28 KOs) at the Thomas & Mack Center as opposed to the Orleans Hotel where it was originally scheduled to appear.

Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 knockouts), meanwhile, has been given an unlimited license, said Kizer, and is set to face 41-year-old Roy Jones (50-4-6, 40 KOs) in an April 3 rematch of their 1993 clash won by Jones. Their bout is slated for the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

Now, however, Botha (pictured above) and Jones must be licensed, said Kizer, subject to the approval of the commission's five-vote panel on March 17.

One of those items was the subject of 36-year-old Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez (50-5-1, 37 knockouts), the WBA's lightweight (135 pounds) super champion and WBO lightweight titlist.

"I talked, yesterday, with Juan Manuel Marquez as well. He called me from Mexico City. He's going to be coming to my office next week, and we'll be sitting down with Juan Manuel Marquez to try to put together his next fight," said Schaefer (pictured above, second from left, after Floyd Mayweather, with Oscar De La Hoya to his right).

"He really wants Ricky Hatton, and so I'll be talking to Ricky's people. And maybe both of those guys will do a fight, and then fight each other in the fall. That's what Juan Manuel Marquez wants to do," said Schaefer. "Ricky Hatton's people indicated to me that they would love to have a Marquez fight, and Marquez confirmed to me, yesterday, that he would love to fight Ricky Hatton."

At Age 50, Freddie Roach Reflects on His Life, Past, Future

There, Roach took part in the Winner's Circle ceremony of The Joe Hernandez Stakes, presenting the trophy for the afternoon's featured race.

On Friday, even on his birthday, Roach was spending his milestone day doing what he loves best -- training three-time Fighter Of The Year and reigning Fighter Of The Decade Manny Pacquiao and others at his Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif.

A seven-division champion, the 31-year-old Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 knockouts) is preparing for his March 13 WBO welterweight (147 pounds) title defense against Ghanian-born Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs) of the Bronx, New York, to be held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

But on Friday, FanHouse caught up with Roach, who reflected on his life as a trainer and his influences, such as his late mentor, Eddie Futch. Roach touched on what his life is like enduring Parkinson's Disease and other things.

WBC King Devon Alexander Stops IBF Champ Juan Urango in Eighth Round

The nickname for Juan Urango is "Iron Twins," a testament to the Colombian-born, Cooper City, Fla., resident's two, hard fists.

A two-time world titlist, Urango's chin isn't bad either.

For in one of his two tough losses, Urango had gone the distance with England's Ricky Hatton, losing a unanimous decision in January of 2007.

In May, Urango rose to 147 pounds, where he bravely stood toe-to-toe with WBC king Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KOs), before losing a valiantly fought, albeit lopsided 12-round decision.

In his last fight before facing unbeaten, WBC junior welterweight (140 pounds) Devon Alexander on Saturday night in a match up of southpaws, Urango returned to the 140 pound class in August, where he rose from the canvas in the sixth round to stop knockout artist, Randall Bailey (40-7, 35 KOs) in the 11th round of the first defense of his current IBF crown.

But last night, at Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, Connecticut, was a different story against the crafty Alexander, a 23-year-old slick-boxer, puncher whose skills belie his youth.

While controlling the fight from a safe, operating distance that kept him within range to throw punches and prevented him from absorbing much damage from his hard-punching rival, Alexander set a trap that his rival literally walked into.

Alexander dropped Urango with a counter, left uppercut 37 seconds into the eighth round, and did the same, yet again, after a second set of blows -- the most damage coming from a straight right hand to the left temple-- on the way to an eighth round knockout that improved his record to 20-0, with 13 knockouts.

Arum Charges Golden Boy With Discrimination Against Filipino Reporters

Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank Promotions, which promotes seven-division champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines, has charged Golden Boy Promotions with discrimination for allegedly denying Filipino reporters the opportunity to interview Floyd Mayweather near the end of a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday.

According to a story that was first reported by Dennis "dSource" Guillermo of Examiner.com, several Filipino media members, including the legendary Chino Trinidad, were not allowed to interview Mayweather (40-0, 25 knockouts) near the end of the promotional event touting a WBO welterweight (147 pounds) title matchup against champion Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) at LA Live.

"The banning of the Filipino press had not emerged until I heard about it at the Wild Card Gym yesterday afternoon. Manny was training, and had another appointment, and I had to leave before he finished training. So I can't even say that he knew about it, but he probably knows about it now," said Arum, whose negotiations with Mayweather for a potential fight with Pacquiao fell apart over Pacquiao's refusal to be subjected along with Mayweather to Olympic-style drug testing.
